Summer Solstice: 10+ hours of fun in L.A. for the longest day of the year - Press-Telegram: "We will be as tilted toward the sun as we can be," said David Reitzel, an astronomical lecturer at Griffith Observatory. "It's pretty neat because it only happens once a year so it's a great thing to celebrate it. It's another day to make observations and be excited about the universe."
But Reitzel is quick to point out that summer solstice actually occurs in Los Angeles on Thursday, June 20, despite many calendars marking Friday, June 21 as the start of summer.
